Griffith,
New South Wales Australia, is the centre
of a major irrigation area known as the
Murrumbidgee Irrigation Area,
or M.I.A. in its short
form. Water was made available to the Murrumbidgee
Irrigation Area in 1912, turning semi-arid
mallee country into highly productive farming
land. Farmers came on the promise of abundant
water and cheap fertile land. The area is
now a patchwork of agriculture, from fruit
and vegetables to livestock, rice and winegrapes.
Farm production alone is worth more than
$AU 700 million a year.
The
MIA region is renowned for its diversification
in crops and, as the name suggests a very
close dependence upon irrigation. This translates
to high investments in land and crops and
the demand by growers for improved financial
returns. A wide variety of crops are grown
in the region which requires specific areas
of expertise by the grower and the product
supplier. In addition new technology is
constantly becoming available with the supplier
being the integral link for successful results.
M.I.A.
Rural Services is a privately owned
company established in 1983. The company
has grown and expanded from one outlet in
Griffith to two additional retail stores
located at Coleambally, Hay and Leeton.
MIA Rural is recognised
as a leading supplier of crop protection
products in the region.
Griffith continues to be the principal office
where the key business and administration
functions are performed. MIA Rural
employs 24 staff and provides growers with
a diverse range of crop protection products,
seed, fertiliser and specialist plant nutrition
services. As a member of the IHD Group the
company has access to a wide range of member
benefits provided through this affiliation
to further develop and grow the business.
Customer
Service has long been identified by the
management of MIA Rural Services
as a key element to the success of the business.
This is achieved with eight agronomists
providing growers with advice in the field
supported by efficient product supply and
service from the three retail stores. Building
on existing relationships with growers and
new product developments, are seen as an
integral part of the strategic plan for
the business in the short and long term
future. Exclusive access to new products
through distribution agreements and regional
expansion will continue to see the business
grow.
Crops
grown in the markets serviced by MIA
Rural can be categorised into four
main groups:
